Select Committees: Conflicts of Interest

Paul Burstow MP was elected chair of the joint select committee on the draft care and support bill. That would be fine except for the minor fact that he was one of those who wrote the bloody bill.

That’s not to say he won’t recommend changes – maybe he was blocked by his Secretary of State or Downing Street on issues he cared about. But on the face of it, this is a conflict of interest. He shouldn’t even be on that committee. Surely we’d never let a former minister chair a select committee which investigated his or her own actions while in office? Would we?
